Together
we are mission

October 2019: ‘Baptised and sent’
100 years ago, Pope Benedict XV released the encyclical Maximum Illud, which called on Catholics to bring the Good News to all peoples (Missio Ad Gentes). To commemorate this anniversary, Pope Francis has declared October 2019 to be an Extraordinary Month of Mission (EMM). This special month of prayer and action calls us all to renew our missionary commitment. We are called to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with all peoples.
Here to help
The EMM is to be an opportunity for reflection, prayer and support for the whole Church. And in the lead-up to EMM 2019, Missio will be here to help the Scotland, providing advice, materials and support to dioceses.
As the Pope’s official charity for overseas mission, Missio enables Catholics in Scotland to live out the call received at Baptism: to share in the Church’s universal mission.
The Holy Father’s expresses his care for all Churches through the prayer and solidarity Missio encourages. Thanks to your support, Missio can help Churches in mission dioceses reach out to their own communities with the love and compassion of Christ.

Revitalise, renew, reawaken
For the four weeks of October 2019, the Holy Father has approved four themes:

A personal encounter with Jesus Christ living in His Church.

The witness of missionary saints and martyrs.

Biblical, catechetical, spiritual and theological formation for mission.

as a commitment to support the Church’s missionary activity and communities too poor to support themselves, through Missio.
Through these dimensions the Holy Father invites us to renew and reawaken our commitment to mission.
PRAYER FOR THE
EXTRAORDINARY MONTH OF MISSION
Heavenly Father,
when your only begotten Son Jesus Christ
rose from the dead,
He commissioned His followers
to ‘go and make disciples of all nations’
and you remind us that through our Baptism
we are made sharers in the mission of the Church.
Empower us by the gifts of the Holy Spirit to be courageous and zealous
in bearing witness to the Gospel,
so that the mission entrusted to the Church,
which is still very far from completion,
may find new and efficacious expressions
that bring life and light to the world.
Help us make it possible for all peoples
to experience the saving love
and mercy of Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God, forever and ever. Amen.

Looking to the Future
The EMM is not an end in itself, but a means to revitalise, renew, and reawaken ongoing commitment to Missio Ad Gentes. Missio will continue to play its part in encouraging and channelling this commitment to developing Church communities abroad.
One new aspect of Mission Month which has started this year is that the Bishops of Scotland have asked that the Missionary Children's Mass will take place annually on the first Friday of October.
We ask your prayers that this Extraordinary Mission Month will be a source of many graces for everyone in the Church throughout the world.
