St Aidan's have Missio in cheque

ST AIDAN’S Primary School in Wishaw were the latest school to present Missio Scotland with a cheque as a result of their fundraising efforts during Lent.

The morning assembly began with hymns and prayers to mark the beginning of the Month of Mary and saw Missio Scotland candles form part of the school’s beautiful altar. Gerard Gough, Communications Officer for Missio Scotland was then informed by Sandra McLean, the school’s headteacher, about the variety of ways in which the pupils had raised the fantastic total of £350 for the charity.

“There was a cake and candy stall, a crazy hair day and even a staff car wash,” Mrs McLean said. “There were raffles too. Every class did their own thing.

“One of our pupils, Liam Young, even donated the money he received for shovelling snow from his neighbours’ driveways to our Lenten charities, which was just fantastic.

“All-in-all, we’re very proud of the children’s efforts, they’ve been absolutely fabulous.”

Before being presented with the cheque (above) and thanking the staff and pupils for their efforts, Gerard spoke to the boys and girls at the assembly about some of the projects in Uganda supported by Missio Scotland that have benefited from funds raised by Catholic schools the length and breadth of Scotland like St Aidan’s.

The vital funds raised by St Aidan’s will go to the Missionary Children branch of the PMS, the Church's Mission Charity for children. In Scotland, it works in tandem with Catholic Primary Schools and asks children to do two things every day: Pray for the children in mission areas of the world and donate a small coin. Missionary Children joins with children all over the world to help some of the poorest children in the world, children of all faiths or none and also seeks to develop young people and prepare them as the missionaries of the future. Its funds help to: Build clinics, supply medicines and nutritional help, support education projects for children (building, funding and supplying schools). The donations help to develop a child both in an educational and spiritual sense.
