WITH Storm Ashley putting paid to the chances of the 2024 edition of the Pope’s Charity Cup taking place in its usual October date, an exciting final eventually took place just before the schools broke up for the summer.
It was a familiar match-up too—a repeat of the 2023 final that pitted St Francis of Assisi Primary School in Baillieston taking on their near neighbours St Bridget’s Primary School. However, the outcome this year was different as St Francis took home the silverware.
St Bridget’s were looking to win the trophy for a third time at Shettleston Juniors Park and it seemed likely as they went in 2-1 up at the break. However, St Francis came roaring back in the second-half, producing a stunning display and scoring three goals into the bargain to run out 5-2 winners.
As Fr Thomas Devlin presented the cup to the worthy winners, John McManus of the Glasgow Catholic Schools FA thanked both teams for playing their part in yet another excellent Pope’s Charity Cup competition and Missio Scotland for all their support.
The popular football tournament—held in partnership with Missio Scotland and the Glasgow Catholic Schools FA—takes places on an annual basis during Mission Month (October) with the final normally taking place either at the end of the month or at the start of November.
