2019 Christmas Artwork Contest Winners

Our popular Christmas Artwork competition returned this year, encouraging pupils from across Scotland’s dioceses to submit their artistic interpretations of people and events associated with Christmas such as: The Nativity; the Magi; the shepherds; Mary with the Baby Jesus; the Holy Family; the new-born Jesus in the manger; and the Angel Gabriel. Once again, everyone at the Missio Scotland office was impressed and delighted by both the quality and quantity of the entries received.

In the Archdiocese of Edinburgh, Primary 6 pupil Morgan Healey, from St Mary's Primary School in Bathgate, produced a wonderfully vibrant image of the sleeping Baby Jesus. A colourful depiction of the Magi brought home an additional winner for the archdiocese—drawn by Anna Whelton, a Primary 5 pupil at St Joseph's Primary School in Linlithgow. St Bernadette's Primary School, Tullibody, in the Diocese of Dunkeld, produced two winners this year. Zoe Macdonald, a Primary 6 pupil, gave us a magnificently serene depiction of the Holy Family whilst Francesco Ragona of Primary 2 delighted with a smiling Mary cradling the infant child. In the Diocese of Galloway, Tilly Henderson—a Primary 7 pupil of St Patrick's Primary School, Troon—blew the judges away with her simple, yet effective manger scene. This year's winner from the Diocese of Paisley was Ryan Donnelly, a Primary 2 pupil at Craigmarloch Primary School, Port Glasgow. Ryan's representation of the praying Holy Family, perfectly highlighted by the night sky, was impressive. Finally, in a double win for Motherwell Diocese, Molly Sweeney, a Primary 4 pupil at St Timothy's, Coatbridge, captured the essence of the Nativity in a wonderfully colourful scene including the Three Kings. Incorporating the Angel Gabriel, Amelia Panton, a Primary 3 pupil at Corpus Christi Primary School, Calderbank, provided our final winning entry. In addition to the winners receiving a prize for their efforts, all the entries were featured on Missio Scotland’s Facebook and Twitter accounts prior to the Christmas break, before being displayed in their respective diocesan cathedrals. The winning entries will be used as the designs for Missio Scotland's 2020 Christmas cards which will be available for sale later in the year via our online shop.
