WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

"One in Christ, united in mission"

Pope Leo

World Mission Sunday is a day set aside for the Catholic Church throughout the world to publicly renew its commitment to the missionary movement. It is a day when our Holy Father appeals to us all for both spiritual and financial support for overseas missionaries.

You can read Pope Leo's message for World Mission Sunday here.

“I get calls from Bishops from Asia and Africa, and often, during the first three minutes, I hear no words, just sobbing ... They are the ones who rely on World Mission Sunday”

MEN'S REFUGE

On the outskirts of Shkodër in northern Albania, the Vincentian Fathers are creating a place of welcome, dignity and hope for men who have found themselves abandoned, homeless or struggling to rebuild their lives.

For Fr Augustin Margjoni, their mission is simple: to go where the need is greatest and remain close to those whom others may have forgotten.

The new men’s refuge in Vinotekë will offer more than a roof over someone’s head. It will provide stability, companionship and professional support, giving men the opportunity to recover from difficult experiences and begin rebuilding their lives.

Supported by Missio Scotland, the refuge is a powerful example of the Church accompanying people through some of life’s darkest moments.

Fr Augustin explains why this ministry is so urgently needed—and why standing alongside those on the margins lies at the very heart of mission.

CHILDREN'S CAMP

In the heart of Shkodër, the Franciscan Sisters have created a place where children can feel safe, valued and at home.

Led by Sr Lulë Mecaj, the children’s centre welcomes young people from a wide range of backgrounds, many of whom face poverty, difficulties at home or challenges with their education. Here, they receive a warm meal, help with their schoolwork and, just as importantly, friendship, encouragement and a place to belong.

For Sr Lulë, education gives children the opportunity to discover their gifts, make their own choices and build a better future. Despite the challenges facing families in Albania, the sisters remain alongside the children as they grow and learn.

With support from Missio Scotland helping secure the centre’s future, Sr Lulë shares the joys and challenges of this mission—and her hopes for the children entrusted to their care.

UKRAINE

Amid the continuing war in Ukraine, Fr Luca Bovio has discovered that one of the greatest gifts a missionary can offer is simply to remain close to the people.

As missiles and drones continue to threaten communities, Fr Luca and those around him share not only the dangers of daily life, but moments of prayer, solidarity and hope. In shelters during attacks, they pray the Rosary together, finding strength in their faith and in one another.

Through Missio Scotland’s support, generators are being provided for parish and social centres near the frontline in Kharkiv, offering warmth, hot meals, electricity and a safe place for families, children, elderly people and others in need.

In his testimony, Fr Luca reflects on life and faith during war, the importance of missionary presence, and the powerful bond uniting Ukraine and Scotland as one family in Christ.

World Mission Sunday is a special opportunity to stand in love and solidarity with our brothers and sisters overseas.

Through our prayers, we are united with missionaries everywhere—sharing in their compassion and supporting their work of proclaiming the Good News. By offering a gift, we respond to Christ’s call to care for those most in need.

Every donation given at Mass on this day joins with contributions from Catholics around the world. Together, these funds provide vital support for churches, hospitals, schools, and the training of future priests and religious in places where the Church is still new, young, or poor.
